Vicky O’Brien Takes on the Surrey Half Marathon for Action for Carers Surrey
On Sunday, 22nd March 2026, runners will gather in Woking for the Surrey Half Marathon, a fantastic event that brings together people from all walks of life to challenge themselves and support great causes. Among them is Vicky O’Brien, who is taking on her very first half marathon to raise funds for Action for Carers Surrey.
We caught up with Vicky to find out why she’s running, what the challenge means to her, and why supporting unpaid carers is so important.

What made you decide to run the Surrey Half Marathon for Action for Carers Surrey?
I’m a carer for my husband, and I wanted to do something completely out of my comfort zone. I’ve never run before, so signing up for the Surrey Half Marathon is a huge challenge for me! I chose this because I wanted to give back to Action for Carers Surrey who have been such a lifeline.
They’ve supported both me and my son, who is a young carer, and their advice and events have made a real difference. My son has loved the young carers’ activities, which helped him see he’s not alone. It actually took me a while to realise I was a carer myself, and during the COVID pandemic, ACS opened my eyes to the help that’s out there.
Now my mum is caring for my dad too, so this cause feels even closer to my heart. Running for ACS is my way of saying thank you and helping other families like mine get the support they need
It actually took me a while to realise I was a carer myself, and during the COVID pandemic, ACS opened my eyes to the help that’s out there.
Is this your first half marathon and how are you feeling about the challenge ahead?
Yes this is my very first one! Honestly? I’m feeling scared but excited. It’s something completely different for me, and I’ve never done anything like this before.
When I tell people, their reactions (the shock followed by support!) have been both funny but really motivating. It’s pushing me to keep going and prove to myself that I can do this.
What does running for ACS mean to you?
It means everything. Being a carer is part of my everyday life, so being able to raise money for a charity that supports people like me feels really meaningful. My son, Xander, has loved the young carers’ events, and I want to help ensure that support continues for others.
What are you most looking forward to on race day?
The atmosphere! Being surrounded by people all doing something amazing – whether for themselves or for charity – will be incredible.
Why do you think it’s important to support unpaid carers in Surrey?
There are so many of us doing so much, and often we’re not recognised. Many people don’t even realise they’re carers.
Carers save the government huge amounts of money by providing unpaid support, yet we often take on medical tasks that most people wouldn’t. Recognition and support are vital.
I want people to know that ACS exists – even if they don’t need help now, they might in the future.
What do you hope your fundraising will achieve for carers in Surrey?
I hope it helps provide more support for unpaid carers and raises awareness. I want people to know that ACS exists – even if they don’t need help now, they might in the future. If my fundraising helps just one person in the same position as me, it will be worth it.
What would you say to someone who’s thinking about signing up but is unsure?
Just do it! I’m not a runner and rarely step out of my comfort zone, so if I can do this, anyone can. Push yourself, you’ll have so much encouragement on the day, and the atmosphere will carry you through.
Plus, every mile you run helps ACS provide vital support to unpaid carers who give so much every single day.
